The role. Mercer Peace River is seeking a full-time, temporary Procurement Specialist within the Business Services Department. This role ensures the most favourable vendor pricing and payment terms are consistent with acceptable quality and availability when procuring all materials and services for all mill operations. The term of this position will extend until May 31, 2025, with the possibility of extension.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide solutions and support to operations regarding quality, quantity, price, and delivery of products.
  • Work closely with suppliers to build mutually beneficial relationships and ensure the product is up to the highest standards.
  • Staying informed of market fluctuations and adjusting strategy as necessary.
  • Identify opportunities and implement actions to achieve efficiencies.
  • Source and negotiate with vendors for materials, equipment, and services.
  • Review planned orders and manage the approval process.
  • Transmit and prioritize purchase orders and supporting documents to suppliers.
  • Prepare and communicate shortages and backlog reports and provide visibility of potential interruptions.
  • Track orders and confirm system lead times, delivery dates, and costs.
  • Ensure orders adhere to supplier agreements and contacts.
  • Investigate and resolve invoice pricing variances from purchase orders and amend where necessary.  
  • Additional duties, as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Completed Diploma or Degree in Business, Management, or a similar field.
  • 3 to 5 years of purchasing experience is preferred, with more considered an asset.
  • A Certificate in Supply Management (SMT) or Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation would be considered an asset.
  • Good leadership and a team approach to business dealings.
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating and vendor management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), as well as facilitation, analytical, and problem-solving skills, are required.
  • Experience in an industrial maintenance/production setting is preferred.
  • Fosters a sense of urgency and prioritizes time appropriately to complete assigned tasks.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in Google G-suite, specifically Google Sheets and Google Docs.
