Peace River's operations commenced in 1990. Peace River converted to producing 100% elemental chlorine-free pulp in 1998 and during this time it also achieved a new annual production record of 1,219 ADMTs (“NBSK”) and 1,501 ADMTs (“NBHK”) per day, respectively.
The majority the mill’s softwood pulp sales are made to North America, while the remainder is shipped to Asia. The mill sells a significant portion of its hardwood pulp to North American and Asian customers, with a small portion also being sold to European markets.
Peace River’s efficiency and operational excellence are recognized through its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications. The mill is also recognized for using sustainably harvested wood through its Program for Endorsement of Forest Certification (“PEFC”) and Forest Stewardship Council (“FSC”) Chain of Custody certifications. Additionally, Peace River is recognized by the Sustainable Forest Initiative (“SFI”) for forest management and fibre sourcing, and by the Alberta government through its Partnerships in Injury Reduction Certification of Recognition.
In 2004, DMI, the former owners of the mill, entered into a limited partnership agreement with the Woodland Cree First Nation to form Peace River Logging Limited Partnership (“PRLLP”). PRLLP continues to provide competitively priced harvesting, chipping, and delivery services for Peace River. PRLLP is committed to utilizing ecologically-based management harvesting techniques within the region’s sustainably managed forests.
