Mercer Peace River Announces Scheduled Fall Maintenance Shutdown

Ten-day planned maintenance outage in September will strengthen long-term mill reliability and safety

PEACE RIVER, Alberta — August 04, 2026 — Mercer International Inc. (Nasdaq: MERC) today announced that its Peace River pulp mill will undertake a planned 10-day maintenance shutdown from September 7 to 17, 2026, a standard practice across the pulp industry that allows maintenance and operations teams to complete critical inspections, upgrades and equipment servicing that cannot be performed while the mill is running.

The shutdown is expected to reduce production by approximately 15,000 air-dried metric tonnes (ADMTs), a planned and anticipated impact that has been factored into the mill’s annual production outlook.

“Planned maintenance shutdowns are one of the most important things we do all year,” said Cal Dakin, Managing Director of Mercer Peace River. “Taking the mill down on our schedule, rather than reacting to an unplanned failure, lets our teams get into the equipment, inspect it inside and out, and make the upgrades that keep Peace River running safely and reliably for our employees, our customers and this community for years to come.”

Annual maintenance shutdowns are standard practice across the global pulp industry, giving mills the chance to service equipment that runs continuously for the remainder of the year and cannot be safely inspected or repaired while operating. At Peace River, the 2026 work will be focused on the digester internal inspection and repairs, pulp machine optimization work, and the recovery boiler inspection. 

The shutdown will bring an influx of 475 to 500 contractors and specialized trades to the Peace River area for the duration of the outage, supporting local suppliers, accommodations and services. Mercer’s Peace River workforce will remain fully engaged throughout the shutdown, working alongside contract crews to complete the maintenance program safely and on schedule.

The mill is expected to resume normal production immediately following completion of the maintenance work in September. Mercer will continue to work with customers and logistics partners to manage the temporary reduction in output.
