What is the NAT Thuringia

The Thuringia Sustainability Agreement is an agreement between the state government of Thuringia and various stakeholders from business, science and civil society to jointly implement measures to promote sustainability and environmental protection in Thuringia. The agreement was signed in 2011 and covers various fields of action, such as climate protection, resource efficiency, renewable energies and sustainable mobility. The aim is to develop Thuringia into an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable federal state.

Innovative solutions are to be found and implemented through the cooperation of all stakeholders to protect the environment and improve the quality of life of people in Thuringia in the long term.

The Thuringia Sustainability Agreement is an essential step toward sustainable development. It shows that joint efforts by government, business and society are crucial to overcoming the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.

The Sustainability Agreement in Thuringia pursues several key objectives:

  • Environmental protection and climate protection: reduction of CO2 emissions, promotion of renewable energies, sustainable agriculture and nature conservation measures.
  • Social responsibility: Promotion of education, equal opportunities and social integration, combating poverty and discrimination.
  • Economic sustainability: promoting sustainable economic structures, supporting environmentally friendly companies and innovations.

Specific measures and initiatives have been developed to implement these goals. These include promoting electromobility, expanding renewable energies, creating environmentally friendly jobs, and raising public awareness of sustainable action. However, sustainable development can only be achieved through joint cooperation.

Agreement partners and companies are united by a common understanding of sustainable development based on the careful and responsible use of natural resources. Sustainable companies from Thuringia network within the framework of the agreement. Participation in the agreement is voluntary.

Sustainable power generation – green electricity

We operate a biomass cogeneration plant at our Saalburg-Ebersdorf site. Some sawmill byproducts are used here to generate energy: In addition to the thermal energy for our drying plants, we generate electrical energy fed into the public grid.

Added value – utilizing synergies

Our sister company in Torgau further processes sawdust, other by-products resulting from the processing of raw wood into sawn timber, into pellets, pallet blocks, and briquettes.

Our sister plants convert the wood fibers from the wood chips into high-quality pulp, which in turn is the main component of all types of paper and cardboard.

By creating these synergies, Mercer efficiently uses the added value of the raw material wood, thus ensuring that no resources remain unused.

External experts verify the high standards at the site through annual PEFC, SURE, ISO 50001 and CoC audits.
