Test-driving an electric forklift: Mercer International focuses on sustainability

Sustainability and innovation in the sawmill: Mercer Timber Products tests 16-tonne electric forklift with lithium-ion technology.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Mercer recently tested a 16-tonne electric forklift truck from Kalmar Germany GmbH with the latest lithium-ion technology at its sawmill in Friesau. The four-week test was designed to assess the truck’s performance and practicality under real-world conditions.

Focus on efficiency and flexibility

The electric forklift truck performed impressively in the test. With a battery capacity of up to 230 kWh, it was able to operate for eight hours at a time. The newly constructed charging infrastructure, with charging points of up to 300 kW, makes it possible to charge the battery from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes. This fast-charging capability makes the electric forklift particularly attractive for multi-shift operations and offers the potential to sustainably increase the flexibility and productivity of the sawmill.

Electrification of the forklift fleet planned

The insights gained from the test deployment are helping Mercer Timber Products plan the conversion of its forklift fleet. The purchase of the first electric forklift is firmly scheduled for 2025. At the same time, the necessary charging infrastructure is being built to ensure a smooth transition. In the long term, all diesel forklifts are to be replaced by zero-emission alternatives.

Company management is behind the initiative

The company’s management is also convinced of the potential of the electric forklifts. CEO Juan Carlos Bueno visited the sawmill to see the test deployment in person. The positive results were recognised as an important milestone on the road to greater sustainability and resource efficiency.

‘The switch to electric forklift trucks is an important step in our sustainability strategy. We want to do our part to protect the climate while also increasing the efficiency of our logistics,’ said Juan Carlos Bueno, CEO of Mercer International, during his visit to the sawmill.
