Mercer Torgau is restoring 157,000 m² of land to support biodiversity. Mercer Torgau is renaturing 157,000 m² in Northern Saxony. Wildflower meadows, hedgerows, and small bodies of water create new habitats for insects, amphibians, and reptiles. Mercer International is committed to a sustainable future that integrates economic, ecological, and social issues. By restoring 157,000 m² of land in northern Saxony, Mercer Torgau is investing in the future of the environment and nature. But what exactly does renaturation mean, and why is it so important? Renaturation: Helping nature along Renaturation means returning habitats that humans have altered to a near-natural state. The aim is to promote biological diversity and restore ecosystem functionality. In times of climate change and species extinction, renaturation measures are increasingly important. They help strengthen nature’s resilience to climate change and provide habitat for various animal and plant species. Renaturation measures can take many different forms. They range from the restoration of floodplains and moors to the creation of flowering meadows and hedgerows and the creation of nesting opportunities for birds and bats. 22 football pitches of new habitat A 157,000-square-meter area—equivalent to 22 football pitches—is being used to create new habitats for plants, insects, amphibians, and reptiles. The project, which began in 2024, aims to restore areas around Torgau to a near-natural state. Hedgerows have been planted to frame the site on a 19,700-square-meter area, which lies between a forest and an agricultural area. In between, there is an 80,869-square-meter ruderal area. Ruderal areas are areas where vegetation develops naturally without human intervention. Bird seeds, for example, are used to create a species-rich natural environment in ruderal areas. This makes them essential habitats for pioneer species of plants, animals, and fungi. However, insects also appreciate these areas, as they find nectar, pollen, and wintering places here. Mercer Torgau contributes to environmental protection By restoring the areas in Northern Saxony, Mercer Torgau is making an important contribution to maintaining biodiversity and protecting the natural environment. Sustainability at Mercer International Mercer International is committed to sustainable forestry and protecting the environment. The restoration measures in Torgau are an important part of these efforts. Learn more about how nature-based solutions support climate resilience → Sustainability
