The role. We are seeking a full-time, permanent Environmental Technician within our Environment Department. We are looking for individuals with a deep interest in the environment and who want to build a strong set of skills, talents and experiences to excel in their environmental careers. Our Environmental technicians are instrumental in meeting regulatory standards and Mercer Peace River’s sustainability goals. Role and Responsibilities: Monitor the water and effluent treatment processes to ensure proper operation. Control processes and equipment used to clarify, purify and disinfect surface water for both human consumption and industrial use. Process, test and treat industrial wastes to meet discharge standards and regulations. Collect and analyze samples; make adjustments in accordance to the lab results. Be able to do minor maintenance on chemical injection systems. Calibrate lab equipment, online equipment and some instrumentation. Compile and complete reports for appropriate government agencies and all the required documentation. Train to respond to industrial emergencies. Work both inside in a controlled environment and outside in an uncontrolled environment. Exposure to hot/cold and humid/dry when working outdoors. Wood dust exposure when working in the hog tower. Exposed to slippery surfaces outdoors in wintertime. Additional duties, as required. Qualifications and Experience Successful completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent. Diploma in a technical discipline (e.g. Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology) from a recognized post-secondary program would be considered an asset. Ability and willingness to learn – expectation is to achieve Level 1, 2 and 3 Water and Wastewater certifications within 4 years Ability to work a revolving 28-day shift work cycle in a physically demanding environment. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Microsoft Excel. Advanced organizational skills, with the capacity to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines. Strong attention to detail with the ability to check accuracy of work and provide consistent follow-up. Advanced interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. Self-motivated and able to anticipate and respond to changes in a professional service-oriented manner. Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work calmly and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
