The role.  We are seeking a remote, full-time, permanent Forest Analyst. This position is based out of Edmonton, Alberta, and is a remote work opportunity with the possibility of moving to an Edmonton-based office. As a Forest Analyst, you will show exceptional creativity and initiative in supporting the data and information needs of the Woodlands team. Reporting directly to the Strategic Management Superintendent, the successful candidate will provide spatial and analytical support for forest management plans, operational plans and a variety of strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will also provide technical support/maintenance to the online and in-house GIS systems, specialized analyses and mapping tasks and management of spatial data projects.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and analyze large datasets (forest inventories, high-resolution imagery, LiDAR, growth and yield, etc.) to develop tools and systems in support of forest management and strategic initiatives
  • Assist in the development and running of software for tactical and operational planning using ArcPro (ESRI), Stratus, and Remsoft’s Toolset (Woodstock, Road Optimizer, Tactical Planning module and Operations module) in support of MPR’s logistics and dispatching initiatives.
  • Coordination and maintenance of MPR’s Growth and Yield Program (PSPs, TSPs, etc), including the maintenance of information for the provincial PGYI database.
  • Design, develop, and maintain custom applications for the purpose of data analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Woodlands team in continuous improvement initiatives to support MPR’s forestry operations.
  • Liaise with government research agencies, consultants and other companies
  • Produce custom maps and reports for miscellaneous projects

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree or technical diploma in Forestry, Environment, or other related fields
  • 5+ years of experience in a related field
  • Experience in operational forestry, strategic planning, timber supply analysis and growth and yield modelling
  • Extensive experience working with GIS software, with preference to ESRI’s ARCGIS and/or ArcPro suite of tools
  • Demonstrated skills in spatial data manipulation and analysis using relational databases, geodatabases, and scripting languages (Python, R, etc)
  • Must be self-directed, motivated and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to translate complex analytical results into practical knowledge for application
  • Strong project planning, time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines and expectations for quality
  • The successful candidate must reside in the Edmonton area and be able to travel to the Peace River office and surrounding locations when required
