Position Description

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Development, the Senior Associate will support the corporate development team and Mercer International’s senior management to identify, evaluate, and execute strategic initiatives that align with the company’s overall objectives. The primary focus of this role is to consolidate complex pieces of information into concise and easy to understand presentations and documents to support the decision making of senior management and the board of directors. The work of the Senior Associate is primarily project-based, and they will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders. 

This is a hybrid role based in our head office in Vancouver, BC.

Responsibilities

  • Provide end-to-end analytical support for mergers, acquisitions, divestments, partnerships, and major capital project investments.
  • Lead cross-functional due diligence workstreams to assess legal, financial, and operational risks/synergies, and assist with post-merger integration.
  • Explore and evaluate external partnership and funding opportunities, with a specific focus on decarbonization and ESG-driven initiatives.
  • Gather data to build and maintain complex, technically accurate financial models to evaluate the feasibility, valuations, and potential returns of strategic projects.
  • Establish quantitative criteria and key performance indicators to track, evaluate, and manage project progress throughout execution.
  • Synthesize complex findings into high-impact business cases, reports, and presentations for senior management, the Board, and external investors.
  • Act as a key liaison to build and maintain strong relationships with internal cross-functional leaders, external partners, and government representatives.
  • Lead project management for complex corporate initiatives, establishing timelines, assigning deliverables, and ensuring cross-functional accountability.
  • Directly manage and mentor Analysts and Co-ops by reviewing complex financial models, managing workflows, and taking accountability for their professional growth and output quality.
  • Establish and oversee standardized documentation and reporting protocols across all corporate development activities to secure institutional knowledge and audit readiness.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Requires 4-6 years of relevant professional experience in a fast-paced, analytical environment such as Investment Banking/Corporate Development, Transaction Advisory, Equity Research, Management Consulting, Corporate Finance/FP&A.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Business, Finance, Economics or similar, is required. 
  • CFA, CPA, CBV, or other similar designation is considered an asset.
  • Financial modelling skills required, specifically experience in valuation modelling, forecasting, and cost benefit analysis.
  • A self-starter with a high level of autonomy and resourcefulness to be able to overcome roadblocks.
  • High level of business acumen with ability to approach problems from a strategic lens and determine the impacts of decisions across all areas of the business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to learn and adapt, including the ability to quickly pivot and reassess priorities.
  • Ability to work on / manage multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines, without sacrificing attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and with a team.

Salary & Benefits

  • The salary for this position is $100,000 – $115,000 annually. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

  • RRSP – We provide a competitive RRSP contribution plan, with base contributions made by Mercer which can be supplemented with personal contributions matched by the company up to a certain %.
