Mercer International recognizes the Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Advisory – content relating to Indigenous residential schools.

This past year in Canada has been marked by the tragic recovery of the remains of many Indigenous children from unmarked graves located at the sites of former residential school institutions across the country. These events are a difficult reminder of the injustices suffered, the depth of the losses experienced, and the ongoing trauma endured by survivors, their families, and communities.

Mercer is committed to taking an active and engaged role in the vital process brought forward by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. It is our responsibility, as a company operating on the territories of many diverse Indigenous peoples, to learn, reflect, and grow in ways that honour and respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

We recognize that the residential school system is much more than a painful truth about our history; these institutions continue to have a lasting impact today. We respectfully acknowledge our Indigenous community partners, staff, families, and neighbours whose lives have been impacted through the direct or shared experiences of the devastating separation from their families, cultures, and identities.

In June of this year, the Canadian Federal government declared September 30th the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This coincides with ‘Orange Shirt Day’, which is recognized annually during the time of year when Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families to attend residential school.

Mercer’s Canadian operations will observe September 30th as a statutory holiday to honour survivors, their families, and communities. This step is consistent with our values, policies, commitments, and most importantly, with the relationships we want to continue to build and strengthen with Indigenous peoples.

Mercer is committed to this journey and will continue to build awareness across our teams; to actively engage with Indigenous peoples and organizations in support of healing. In spirit, intent, and action, we will continue to support truth and reconciliation.
