Timber construction of superlatives: Walmart’s new campus with Mercer Mass Timber
The new Walmart Home Office Campus in Arkansas sets new standards for sustainable and innovative working environments. Covering 350 hectares, the campus combines modern architecture with ecological construction and forward-looking workplace concepts.
As one of the largest solid timber projects in the USA, the campus impressively demonstrates the possibilities of sustainable construction materials. Mercer Mass Timber (MMT) supplied the timber elements for several building complexes, including materials for
- Zone 1: four-storey office buildings Ol’ Roy, Hula, Purpose and Moon Pie
- Zone 3: five-storey Upstream office building
Zone 1 includes four four-storey buildings made of solid timber with a total office space of approximately 82,000 square metres and parking decks, while Zone 3 includes a single five-storey building with a total area of 30,600 square metres. The offices in Zone 3 are built entirely from solid timber frames, which further underlines Walmart’s commitment to innovative sustainable construction practices.
Sustainability and innovation go hand in hand
The use of solid timber makes an important contribution to reducing the campus’ carbon footprint. Timber is a renewable resource and, as it grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By using timber from sustainably managed forests, the environmental impact is further minimised.
MMT also took on the installation work for Upstream. In addition to supplying the wood, MMT also provided support with the planning, including the feasibility of production, logistics and scheduling, as well as with the installation of the solid wood on site. The entire project is aiming for LEED Platinum certification to emphasise its environmentally friendly design.
