Supporting Wellness: International Men’s Day at Mercer

Each year, International Men’s Day provides a moment to reflect on men’s health and well-being. At Mercer, we’re using it to talk openly about something that too often remains in the background: mental health, stigma, and suicide prevention.

Some may ask—why a focus on men? The answer is simple: because silence is still costing lives. In industries like forestry and manufacturing, where men make up the majority of the workforce, the statistics are stark. Men account for three out of every four suicide deaths globally. Yet many still struggle to talk about mental health, or to ask for help when they need it most.

Acknowledging this reality isn’t about excluding others—it’s about saving lives. Creating space for men to talk, reflect, and access support helps us build a culture where every individual, regardless of gender, feels safer speaking up.

Creating a Safer, Healthier Work Environment

Mercer is working to change that culture—from the forest to the mill floor to the office. We provide access to mental health support across all locations, including:

  • 24/7 Employee and Family Assistance Programs (EFAP)
  • Confidential counselling services
  • On-site and virtual mental health awareness sessions
  • Trained Mental Health First Aiders at several sites
  • Peer-led wellness initiatives and toolbox talks

These are more than programs. They’re signals—to every employee—that help is available, and that asking for it is a sign of strength.

Changing the Conversation

Supervisors are encouraged to make space for team discussions, and employees are reminded that mental health is part of workplace safety.

Supporting mental wellbeing isn’t a campaign. It’s part of how we care for each other—and how we build a stronger, safer company.

Because at Mercer, every person matters. And everyone deserves to feel supported.
