Mercer Peace River: Sustainably Diverse Products

The Peace River mill is located in the boreal forest region of Peace River, Alberta, Canada, approximately 500 km north of Edmonton. Mercer Peace River’s pulp mill operations began in 1990 and produce both softwood (NBSK) and hardwood (NBHK) pulp. The majority of our mill’s pulp sales are made to North American customers, while the remainder is shipped to Asian and European markets. At Mercer Peace River, we are proud of our efforts toward the full utilization of all our biomass materials. We are green energy producers, with an electrical energy generation capacity of 65 MW.

Our Peace River location holds the rights to two 20-year renewable government Forest Management Agreements (“FMAs”), along with three other deciduous timber allocations in Alberta. The FMAs total 2.7 million hectares which supply the majority of our annual hardwood and softwood fibre requirements. FMAs grant Mercer Peace River the right to establish, harvest, and utilize the trees within those forest areas. In return for this secure and sustainable supply of trees for the mill’s wood fibre, we agree to meet a number of forest management requirements, including the completion of forest management plans for the FMAs. Within these plans, we show what will be done to ensure a sustainable, long-term even flow of wood fibre, while also providing for other values identified by Indigenous communities and stakeholders who also depend on the forest for their livelihoods and well-being.

Our forest management plans include the efforts and contributions of diverse planning development teams, through consultation with Indigenous communities, government, commercial, and public stakeholders. Our plans are developed on a philosophy of ecological-based forest management practices towards a sustainable future forest, based upon objectives intended to maintain ecological, economic, and spiritual values.

    Our Home in the Peace

Our team members are proud supporters of our local Peace Region. Being an active member of our community is important to us, which is why we continuously seek ways to invest in community-focused organizations. Our Mercer Peace River Elementary Reading Program (with over 1,800 students), company-sponsored scholarships, employment of Work Experience,  and power engineering students are just some of the ways we provide support to our local youth and community.

We are also committed to working with Indigenous communities to support employment, training, and community-focused programs. These include the Peace Regional Aboriginal Interagency Committee (PRAIC) the Outland Youth Employment Program (OYEP), the Sagitawa Friendship Centre, and key cultural events including the Peace River Pow Wow and annual Treaty Day celebrations.
